Bromine Measurement

Bromine Measurement

As an alternative to Chlorine compounds, Bromine compounds are increasingly being used for the disinfection of waters, despite higher costs for chemicals.

Compared to Chlorine compounds Bromine offers some advantages for disinfection purposes:

  • Higher disinfection effect at higher pH values
  • Lower volatility at higher temperatures
  • Less promotion of corrosion
  • Less generation of odours and irritation of the mucous membrane by abreacted Bromine compounds (compound Bromine)

Application Areas

  • Disinfection of cooling tower water
  • Disinfection of swimming pool and whirl pool water on cruise liners

Organic and inorganic free Bromine chemicals are used generally for Bromine measurement. Organic Bromine chemicals are:

  • DBDMH (1.3-Dibromine-5.5-Dimethyl-Hydantoin) labelled e.g. as Albrom 100® in trade
  • BCDMH (1-Bromine-3-Chlorine-5.5-Dimethyl-Hydantoin) labelled e.g. as Bromine-Sticks® in trade.
These Bromine chemicals are offered as solid and are dosed as satured solutions via so-called "Bromine-locks".

Inorganic free Bromine is generated through the so-called Acti-Bromine-Procedure® (Acti-Brom-Verfahren®, Nalco) with Sodium Hypochlorite and Sodium bromide. The Bromine species can be present in various forms and ambients depending on the type of the Bromine-containing disinfectant and the composition of the process water.

Our Program offers the following Advantages:

  • Measurement of the Bromine specifically for disinfection
  • Exact and reliable real time measurement
  • Use of sensor technology in various water qualities (pH, salt content, temperature, turbidity)
  • Easy modular integration in processes of all sensors required for the entire solution via suitable fittings
  • Control devices with signals to adjust metered chemcial to the requirements
  • Easy calibration by means of the complete Photometer kit (type DT1, DPD-based method)
  • For reoccuring tasks: prefabricated measuring and metering stations with plug&play modules are available.
